Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is closed until further notice due to damage from Hurricane Helene.

Located in Ashe County, North Carolina. Mount Jefferson SNA is part of the NC State Parks system since its establishment in October of 1956. This natural area became recognized as a National Natural Landmark in 1974. Mount Jefferson's unique biodiversity, specifically in vascular flora (over 700 identified species) has contributed to this designation. The mountain is 4,465 feet above sea level, rising 1,600 ft in elevation above the surrounding town. Visitors can hike 5 miles worth of trails or drive up the park road and check out the three overlooks by car. There are picnic tables, grills, and even a shelter to enjoy lunch on the mountain.
