BRINGING SCIENCE TO LIFE THROUGH OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Muddy Sneakers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing science education by immersing students in the natural world. Through experiential outdoor learning, we foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a deep connection to North Carolina’s diverse ecosystems. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to awaken in children a sense of wonder for the outdoors while reinforcing essential science concepts through hands-on exploration.
WHAT WE OFFER
At Muddy Sneakers, we believe that the best classroom has no walls. Our school-based programming provides supplemental science instruction aligned with North Carolina’s science curriculum, using local natural areas as living laboratories. Our programs offer students the opportunity to engage with science in a way that is active, meaningful, and fun.
Field trips and outreach programs are led by our team of highly trained instructors who guide students through inquiry-based activities that promote scientific observation, data collection, and teamwork. Lessons are designed to reinforce core science standards, including ecosystems, weather, forces and motion, and inheritance and adaptation.
Our program benefits both students and teachers by:

WHERE WE WORK
Muddy Sneakers serves schools across North Carolina, from the mountains to the Piedmont and beyond. We partner with public schools, charter schools, and homeschool groups, working closely with educators to tailor experiences to their students’ needs. Our programs take place in state parks, nature preserves, and other protected outdoor spaces that provide rich, diverse learning environments.
